We understand that recent media coverage may have raised questions, and we would like to share clear and reassuring information directly with our patients, families and community.
Aurora Healthcare has confirmed that it will not extend its lease for Mackay Private Hospital, which will result in the hospital closing on 16 June 2026.
This decision was made after careful consideration and reflects the increasing challenges facing private hospitals across Australia. It is not a reflection of the quality of care delivered at Mackay Private Hospital, nor the dedication of our clinicians and staff who continue to serve patients with professionalism and compassion.
Information for Our Patients
Your safety, care and wellbeing remain our highest priority.
We understand that this news may feel unsettling, and we want to reassure you that you are supported. Our hospital team will continue to work closely with your treating doctor to ensure your care needs and discharge plans are managed with care and respect.
For patients currently receiving treatment:
- You will continue to receive appropriate care and support.
- The hospital will liaise directly with your treating doctor regarding your ongoing care requirements.
- If your need for hospital care extends beyond 16 June 2026, we will work collaboratively with you, your family and your treating doctor well in advance to ensure there is a clear plan in place and continuity of care is maintained.
- No patient will be left without a plan.

Ongoing Mental Health and Rehabilitation Care Across Queensland
For patients who may require mental health or rehabilitation care now or in the future, Aurora Healthcare continues to provide specialised services across Queensland. These hospitals offer a range of evidence‑based programs and may be considered as part of individual care planning, where appropriate.
- Townsville Private Clinic (North Queensland)
Townsville Private Clinic is North Queensland’s only private inpatient mental health hospital. It provides psychiatrist‑led inpatient and day programs for adults experiencing a range of mental health conditions, including mood disorders, trauma‑related conditions and complex presentations. The clinic has recognised experience supporting defence personnel, veterans and first responders, alongside patients from across the broader North Queensland region. - Eden Private Hospital (Sunshine Coast)
Eden Private Hospital is a specialist rehabilitation hospital focused on helping patients recover and regain independence following illness, injury or surgery. The hospital provides inpatient rehabilitation care supported by multidisciplinary teams, with a strong emphasis on personalised recovery, functional improvement and coordinated discharge planning. - Belmont Private Hospital (Brisbane)
Belmont Private Hospital is Queensland’s largest private hospital dedicated exclusively to mental health care. It provides inpatient and day programs for a wide range of needs, including depression, anxiety, trauma, perinatal mental health, older persons’ mental health and addiction treatment. The hospital is nationally recognised for specialist programs, including care for trauma and dissociative disorders, and offers advanced therapies such as rTMS and other neurostimulation treatments. - Currumbin Clinic (Gold Coast)
Currumbin Clinic is a purpose‑built mental health hospital with a strong focus on addiction and co‑occurring mental health conditions. It offers structured inpatient programs, including medically supervised detoxification, as well as day programs and outpatient support. Care is delivered by multidisciplinary teams with expertise in substance use, behavioural addictions, mood disorders, trauma and pain‑related mental health concerns. - Robina Private Hospital (Gold Coast)
Robina Private Hospital provides integrated mental health and rehabilitation care within a modern hospital campus. It offers inpatient treatment, day programs and outpatient services across general adult mental health, mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders and older persons’ mental health. In addition, Robina provides specialist rehabilitation support, helping patients recover following illness, injury or surgery. Rehabilitation services include access to advanced therapy options such as robotic‑assisted rehabilitation, supporting recovery, mobility and functional improvement as part of a personalised care plan. The hospital also offers access to neurostimulation therapies and coordinated care for patients with both mental health and medical or rehabilitation needs, delivered by multidisciplinary teams working closely with patients and their families.
Any consideration of care at another Aurora hospital would be planned carefully, discussed directly with patients and families, and guided by treating doctors to ensure continuity, comfort and appropriate support at every stage.
